Those Purple Traps
Are For Emerald Ash Borer Detection

The Illinois Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), will use these purple traps in Illinois to look for the emerald ash borer (EAB), an invasive pest that is deadly to ash trees. The beetle is small and stealth-like in its behavior patterns and is extremely difficult to detect. If not controlled, it threatens to devastate the entire ash species in North America.

In early spring, 2,700 box-kite-looking purple traps will be hung in trees state-wide; 750 of these traps will be placed in the Chicagoland area. The traps will be removed shortly after Labor Day by the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

Department officials are asking for the public’s cooperation in ensuring that these traps are left alone to "do their thing. It’s important that the public is aware of the purpose of these sticky, purple things hanging in trees to help keep the traps in place.

Read more information about the emerald ash borer and about the quarantine for northeastern Illinois in an attempt to prevent its spread.

Wii love McHenry Meijer!

McHenry Township seniors extend a warm thank you to the wonderful staff of McHenry Meijer store for donating a Nintendo Wii Game System to McHenry Township Senior Center.

On April 14th, the seniors were introduced to the Wii video game console and loved it! Meijer donated the system with the Sports Package which combines fitness and fun. The staff brought bottled water, pastries, and healthy foods for the kick off party introducing the seniors to the virtual world of gaming.

Open Burning Info  Brush Recycling

McHenry County Board recently approved a revised Ordinance regulating the Open Burning of Landscape Waste in McHenry County.  The Ordinance outlines minimum standards for burning of onsite generated landscape waste in the county.

Municipalities may have an Open Burning Ordinance which exceeds the county’s Open Burning requirements, and would apply to all residents of the municipality.
