Older Americans Month Celebration

Every year, there is a proclamation made by the President of the United States declaring May as "Older Americans Month". America’s seniors are the role models for younger generations and through their years of patriotism, service and responsibility, they teach courage, achievement and love.

May is a time to pay tribute in some way to those age 65 and older through ceremonies and celebrations.

McHenry Senior Center invites you to celebrate Older Americans Month on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 11:30 am. The event includes a delightful culinary menu, musical entertainment and a delectable dessert. Enjoy an afternoon with friends and family as we recognize all you have done for our community.

The cost for the event is $8.00/Residents and $9.00/Non-Resident. Reservations are needed, as seating is limited.

Fireside Theater Day Trip

Enjoy a coach bus trip to see Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park, a rollicking romantic adventure about two young newlyweds starting married life in one of New York’s most off beat and hilarious apartment buildings. The day trip includes lunch which will be served at the theater.

The price for this all-inclusive day trip to the Fireside Theater is $78.00 for McHenry Township residents ($83.00/Non/Resident).

The bus will be leaving McHenry Township Senior Center, 3519 N. Richmond Rd., at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 5th. Advance reservations are necessary. Space is limited.

McHenry Township Hosts 4th Annual Senior Spelling Bee

The senior community is abuzz with news about a spelling bee designed for those 50 years of age or older. This year’s Bee is Wednesday, June 11th at 10:00 a.m. at the McHenry Township Senior Center.

Each participant will receive a certificate of participation and the First, Second and Third Place winners will be awarded prizes.

The winner and the runner up from the McHenry Township Senior Spelling Bee will be invited to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee to be held on Monday, June 23, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. Maine Township in Park Ridge.

The top 2 Regional Spelling Bee winners will head to the Statewide Spelling Bee hosted by Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Association of Illinois Senior center, with the state competition being held in Springfield, Illinois at the State Fair, which will be on Monday August 11, 2008.

You must be a McHenry Township resident (age 50 and older) to compete. Register by June 9th at McHenry Township Senior Center, 3519 N. Richmond Road.

Breakfast-N-Learn: Safely Aging in Place

Aging in Place means not having to move from one's present residence in order to secure necessary support services in response to one’s changing needs. Learn to make your home safe, assessable, and comfortable for the tasks of daily living.

At 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 12th, Kathy Reuter, University of Illinois Extension Educator, will conduct a workshop that will give an overview of simple, low-cost to more expensive modifications including a list of resources. Learn what assistive devices and tools can be used to help you live safer and longer in your own home.

Participants will enjoy a delicious continental breakfast, sponsored by Alden Terrace of McHenry. There is no cost for the event; however reservations are required as seating is limited.

Special Friendship Luncheon
brings people together across the generations

The McHenry Township Senior Center and McHenry Area Youth Commission have joined together to present a special "Friendship Luncheon" designed for area youth and seniors. The Luncheon will be held on Monday, June 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the McHenry Township Senior Center, 3519 N. Richmond Rd. Each senior participant will be teamed up with a youth to enjoy an afternoon of intergenerational laughs, learning and fun.

The McHenry Area Youth Commission offers summer programming for children in our community at the McHenry Township Recreation Center. These programs are lead by professionals whose mission is to "Keep healthy kids healthy". MAYC sponsors prevention programs for youth that promotes responsible choices about drugs, alcohol, violence, & gang involvement through a community-based linkage of educational, governmental, & human service agencies.

The event introduces seniors and youth to the wonderful experience of a mentoring friendship which fosters real understanding between people of different ages. A delicious lunch will be served to all participants. There is no charge for the event, however reservations are needed.

A second Friendship Luncheon is scheduled for July 21st at 10:30 a.m. Reservations are required.

Annual Senior Summer Picnic

McHenry Township, Salvation Army Golden Diners and Senior Services Associates, Inc invite you to the McHenry Township Senior Center’s "Old Time Fun" Picnic! Celebrate Independence Day and National Hot Dog Month on Wednesday. July 9th at the Senior Center’s 4th annual Summer Picnic.

The festivities include: grilled hot dogs, games like water-balloon-toss and cake walk, a delicious ice cream dessert and toe tapping band music to dance or just relax outdoors under the tent.

The picnic begins at 11:30 a.m. in Albert Adams Park across the parking lot from McHenry Township Senior Center. If it rains or is too hot, the picnic will be held inside at McHenry Township Hall. There is a $5.00 admission fee.

Old Fashion Country Hoe-Down

It’s time to dust off your "old country duds" and slip into your favorite boots! Saddle up and head on down to McHenry Township Hall , 3703 N. Richmond Rd. for our second annual Old Fashion Country Hoe Down!

Tip your hats to the sponsors of this year’s event: Alden Terrace, McHenry Township and Senior Services Associates who invite you to join in on some good old country fun on Friday, July 25 at 11:30 p.m. The festivities begin with a western-themed lunch featuring fried chicken and baked beans.

The afternoon will be filled with music, do'si'do's and most importantly lots of fun. Country and Western music entertainment will be provided by, Ramblin' Rich; dancing is encouraged—two-step or otherwise.

The cost for the afternoon is $3.00. Reservations are required as space is limited.

A Day at the Zoo

Join us Friday, August 29, 2008. for a special Senior Celebration Day at the Milwaukee Zoo. On this special day, seniors 55 and older (with I.D.) are admitted free. In addition to enjoying the animals and a leisurely stroll around the grounds, participants will be able to take part in free health screenings, musical performances, and bingo.

The motor coach bus will leave McHenry Township Senior Center at 8:00 a.m. The cost for the day is $18.00 for McHenry Township residents ($20.00/Non-Resident). Meals are not included. Participants are reminded to bring some money for lunch or snacking.

Lake Geneva Luncheon Cruise

Take a ride on the most exciting tour Lake Geneva Cruise Line offers—The Meal Cruise. This 2¼ hour cruise offers breath-taking scenery; find dining cuisine and a caption narrated tour. The lunch special includes Chicken Cordon Bleu, chicken breast stuffed with ham and Swiss cheese laced with cheddar cheese sauce, seasoned potatoes and vegetables. Also included in the special are fresh fruit, rolls, coffee or soda and dessert.

The cruise is scheduled for Thursday, September 3rd and our motor coach bus will depart at 9:30 a.m. from McHenry Township Senior Center. The cost for this all-inclusive trip is $60.00 for McHenry Township residents ($65.00/ Non-Residents). Advance reservations are needed, as seating is limited.

National Senior Center Week "Vegas Style"

McHenry Township Senior Center continues to be one of the busiest centers in the county, with over 1000 senior participates and 18,000 repeat visits. Fun activities and lots of friendly camaraderie is what you will find when you walk into our center.

In addition to the Golden Diner’s Deli-style lunches, our center offers social activities, a range of educational programs, creative arts, exercise, volunteer opportunities, community services and other special events which keeps our seniors happy and healthy.

A Week of Vegas": McHenry Township invites all you "High Rollers" to celebrate our Senior Center during the week of September 14th-19th. You’ll be a big winner having fun and enjoying a week filled with games, parties, socials and much, much more. Get Connected! This is the perfect time to visit your local community Senior Center.

Tuesday, September 16th at 10:00 a.m.: "Right Out of Our Past". Join us for a fascinating educational presentation. Nancy Fike, McHenry County Historical Society Museum Administrator, will be here with the museum’s traveling photo exhibit and lots of great stories to go along with it. The exhibit will be on site all week at the Senior Center. There is no cost for this event, however reservations are needed.

Wednesday, September 17th11:00 a.m.: "A Day In a Vegas Casino": Since we can’t go to Vegas, were bringing it to you. Enjoy an afternoon with friends playing some of your favorite casino games, including blackjack, Roulette, poker dice, bingo, horse races and much, much more. Join in the celebration: food, prizes (no money) and lots of raffles. The cost for the afternoon is $5.00. Reservations are needed as space is very limited.

Thursday, September 18th: "Museum of Science and Industry Day Trip". Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, one of the largest science museums in the world, is home to more than 35,000 artifacts and nearly 14 acres of world-class exhibits The museum is an interactive learning experience. Spend the day exploring.

The motor coach bus will leave McHenry Township Senior Center, 3519 N. Richmond Rd. at 8:00 a.m. The cost for the day trip is $21.00 for McHenry Township residents ($23.00/Non-Township Resident). Meals are not included; participants can enjoy a delicious lunch at one of the three in-house cafés.

Friday, September 19th: at 11:30 a.m. "Cash Raffle Luncheon". "A Tribute to Mae West Show". The Staff of Senior Services Associates of McHenry invite you to their Annual Lucky Bucks Luncheon Fundraiser. The celebration includes a special lunch menu, spectacular entertainment and a cash raffle with a grand prize of $700.00 and three prizes of $100.00.

After lunch enjoy a "Tribute to Mae West Show" with impersonator, Mary Anne Brukhalter. You will be falling off your chairs with laughter as Mary Anne involves her audience in her humorous skits. Don't miss this special event. The cost is $9.00 and advanced reservations are required, as seating is limited.
