The Township’s Transportation Program services senior
residents in the 60050, 60051, 60097 and 60072 zip code areas. The
bus fare is $1 per ride which is a one-way trip and even
with the high increases in gasoline prices, the township
anticipates no fare increases. (As a reminder: additional stops
require additional fees.) As always, seniors unable to pay the
fare will still be provided service.
The Senior Transportation Program is funded primarily by
McHenry Township tax dollars with additional funding through
grants from the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, the
Community Development Block Grant and the McHenry County Senior
Grant Program.
Consistent with other Para Transit programs, the actual cost of
performing this type of public transportation is approximately $16
per ride which includes the cost of salaries for drivers and a
dispatcher, fuel costs, radio service and vehicle maintenance.
The demand for service continues to increase as our population
ages and is no longer able to drive. Para transit service allows
older residents to continue to lead independent lives and remain
in their homes. PACE operates only within the City of McHenry, leaving most township seniors without transportation.
Although an expensive program, the McHenry Township Board
recognizes the importance of this much needed service in our area.
Through a generous grant from the McHenry County
Community Foundation, Faith In Action of McHenry County has prepared and published a Senior
Transportation Options Booklet. This 24-page booklet is available, while supplies last, and may be picked up at their office, 7105 Virginia Road, Ste 21 in Crystal Lake (815-455-3120) or download a copy here.
