On November 8, 2001, The McHenry Township Board
amended the Nuisance Ordinance to promote the health, safety and
general welfare of its residents by prohibiting property owners
from allowing weeds to go unattended.
Weeds serve as a breeding place for mosquitoes and rodents
and are a menace to health and are thereby declared a public
nuisance.
Vegetation of farms for conservation purposes are
exempt and landscape, shrubbery and ornamental plants are exempt
when properly maintained.
Violators will be noticed in writing and given an
opportunity to correct the problem.
If they fail to respond to request to mow, the Township has
the authority to have the property mowed and will bill the
property owners for reasonable costs and attorneys fees.
Please contact the Township offices to make a
complaint or for a copy of this ordinance at 1-815-385-5605.
Please Note: The
process of enforcement allows for due process for the property
owner with time allowed for notification, appeal and remediation.
The township is bound by those regulations and unless the
weeds create an emergency situation, we must abide by the lengthy
process.
